It was a three-month clandestine operation. We were sworn to total secrecy and anyone mentioning the word “internet” was threatened with instant decapitation. But finally we were allowed to reveal the big news from our longest-standing client, MWEB, late last week. And it was worth the wait.
MWEB, with backing from its parent company, Naspers announced the launch of the cheapest, unlimited internet access in South Africa. The move, which surprised the market, meant that South Africans are a step closer to being able to use the internet like the rest of the world does. As a leading South African ISP, MWEB announced the launch of a full range of uncapped ADSL packages for consumers and businesses at an affordable, highly competitive price. With products priced from R219 per month and some 40% cheaper than other offerings, MWEB became the first major player in South Africa to offer uncapped ADSL on a significant scale, available 24 hours a day, with all the value-added products, technical back-up and a world-class network – at an affordable price.
It was a flurry of activity when we finally broke the story on Thursday morning, and the response from the media was fantastic. Front page of The Star newspaper and front page of the Cape Argus in one day. And huge response from the online media, in particular mybroadband and Tech Central.
